US Airways jet loses wing panel during flight

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), which investigates accidents, said the panel broke loose on March 22 from a Boeing Co 757-200 operating as Flight 1250 from Orlando to Philadelphia.

The four-foot square piece, attached to the top side of the left wing, struck several windows toward the rear of the plane and cracked one outer pane. The window´s inner pane was not damaged and the cabin did not lose pressure, the safety board said in a statement on its investigation.

The jetliner carrying 174 passengers and crew of six landed safely in Philadelphia. The panel is constructed of carbon composites and has not been found.

US Airways said it subsequently inspected wing panels on 17 other older model 757s and performed minor repairs on seven. The airline canceled 13 flights between Saturday and Wednesday while the work was completed.

"All are back in service," said airline spokesman Philip Gee.

Separately, Gee said US Airways is voluntarily rechecking paperwork on 85 older model 737s to ensure compliance with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) directives covering inspections for fuselage and window cracks. Southwest Airlines (LUV.N: Quote, Profile, Research) grounded dozens of 737s this month due to lapses in completing similar checks.

Gee said US Airways has been in compliance with FAA requirements to date and has found no problems during the recheck.

The lapses at Southwest triggered an FAA maintenance audit of all U.S. airlines that has resulted in extra aircraft inspections and hundreds of canceled flights this week at American Airlines, a unit of AMR Corp, and Delta Air Lines Inc.
