Kawasaki Heavy to Build Parts Factory for Boeing 787
|
Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd., Japanīs second-largest aerospace company, will spend 20 billion yen ($187 million) on a factory to make parts for Boeing Co.īs twice-delayed 787 Dreamliner plane.
The Kobe-based company will construct a 38,000-square meter (409,000-square feet) factory south of an existing plant in Nagoya, confirming a plan announced in June, according to a faxed statement today. The plant is due to open in January 2009.
Boeing has record orders for its 787 Dreamliner jet, now slated for delivery in early 2009. The Dreamliner program is being hampered by vendors shipping incomplete parts to Boeing, which has racked up 841 orders valued at $144 billion at list prices in its most successful sales campaign ever.
Kawasaki Heavy, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. and Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. are the main Japanese suppliers for Chicago-based Boeing and together make 35 percent of the parts for the 787. Kawasaki makes forward fuselage parts for the plane.
The investment for the factory excludes rent for the plot, Yusuke Kamada, a spokesman for Kawasaki Heavy, said by telephone.
