Hawaiian Airlines buys 2 new jets

Hawaiian Airlines will buy two more planes in addition to the previous announced agreement to buy up to 24 Airbus aircraft.

The company, a subsidiary of Hawaiian Holdings said the two jets will join the airline’s fleet in 2011.

“These additional aircraft underscore Hawaiian’s commitment to future growth and to reaching new markets globally, which will be a huge plus for Hawaii travelers and for the long-term health and diversity of Hawaii’s tourism industry,” said Mark Dunkerley, Hawaiian’s president and CEO, in a statement.

The two wide-body A330-200 jets seat 298 passengers in a two-class configuration, increasing the carrier’s seating capacity. The jets will also improve its fuel efficiency and have the ability to provide nonstop service to all of North America and eastern Asia.

The company also announced a separate agreement with AWAS to extend to 2011 the leases of two Boeing 767-300ER jets currently in the fleet. The newly lease A330s will replace the B767s with the extended leases.

In February, the company announced it $4.4 billion deal 12 new jets from Airbus and had secured the purchase rights for 12 more. Those jets are scheduled to be delivered in 2012.

Shares of Hawaiian Holdings stock closed down 2.4 percent to $5.66.
