Aer Lingus, United Airlines sign codeshare deal
|
Irish carrier Aer Lingus and United Airlines have signed a deal that will give their passengers access to more destinations in Europe and the United States without having to make separate bookings.
Aer Lingus said in a statement on Tuesday that, subject to U.S. government approval, the codeshare agreement will allow its customers to fly to an additional 200 U.S. destinations by picking up connecting United Airlines flights.
Customers of United Airlines, a unit of UAL Corp, will now be able to fly direct to Dublin with Aer Lingus rather than having to fly to London Heathrow and pick up a connecting flight with British carrier bmi.
The agreement will also give U.S. passengers landing in Ireland access to Aer Lingus destinations across Europe.
"This relationship further builds on our growing U.S. route network and will provide customers with seamless travel options to over 200 destinations served by United Airlines in the U.S.," Aer Lingus Chief Executive Dermot Mannion said in a statement.
Aer Lingus said that under the terms of the agreement its transatlantic flights to and from Dublin and Shannon in Ireland would now also be identified by the United Airlines flight code.
Irelandīs former state airline, which currently flies direct to seven cities in the United States, has been among the first European carriers to expand its American route network thanks to the Open Skies deal between the U.S. and the European Union.
In February Aer Lingus also teamed up with low-cost U.S. carrier JetBlue Airways Corp in an Internet booking partnership allowing customers to book a single reservation between Ireland and more than 40 continental U.S. destinations.
"Chicago and Ireland have a rich history, and our relationship with Aer Lingus will give our customers more non-stop destinations across the Atlantic," Michael Whitaker, Senior Vice President at Chicago-based United Airlines, said.
"Partnering with the national carrier of Ireland ... supports our strategy of international growth," Whitaker added.
Thinly traded Aer Lingus shares were up 0.5 percent at 2.03 euros in Dublin by 1220 GMT, outperforming a 1.25 percent weaker Irish market .ISEQ.
